Movie Review : Punyalan Private Limited
Director Ranjit Sankar’s 2013 comedy Punyalan Agarbattis launched a likeable Thrissur based businessman named Joy Thakkolkkaran, played by Jayasurya.
In the earlier version, Joy came up with a rather curious idea, making incense sticks from elephant dung. The Thrissur accent, some characters like Aju Varghese’s Greenu Sharma and Sreejith Ravi’s Abhay Kumar, some social and political statements and superb music made it entertaining.
Punyalan Private Limited begins when Joy is facing severe financial trouble. His properties have been attached by the bank, Greenu has gone to the Gulf and Joy’s wife Anu passed away sometime back. But Joy is not ready to give up.
He starts a plant where mineral water is made from elephant’s urine. Then, after a while, he takes on the system, the politicians, the media and the legal system. And then there is a Muthalvan style twist, but even before you can say it, the Tamil film is mentioned in one of the dialogues. Quite smart, did you say?
In all fairness, the writer-director has succeeded in making some relevant points that are topical and some thoughts which should have definitely crossed your mind as a common man, during these times of dirty politics and media highhandedness.
But the problem is the lazy way in which it has been executed, with a rather shaky script and too much dialogues. The statements sound too superficial and it’s more like those angry comments that we see in the social media, vented out against almost any subject in the news.
Even then, it is Jayasurya’s matured show that makes the going convincing. He is earnest and subtle. Sreejith Ravi, who had delivered an excellent performance in Punyalan Agarbattis, is good initially but hams it up after a while. Dharmajan shines as Joy’s lawyer, Peer Thaneesh. While Aju Varghese’s presence is mainly through the skype window, Nyla Usha is limited to a few photos.
Punyalan Private Limited has its moments but perhaps is not that effective as the first part.
